The photographs
Week of 27 JulyFive seedlings on 31 July still bent double in yellow-green loops with not one leaf open between them, two of them lying flat against a pale stone, and across the corner a spider sheet-web spread over the bark, every strand of it beaded with dew.Week of 31 AugustFoliage cut two and three times over into small toothed segments on 4 September, packed edge to edge until it reads as one canopy rather than rows — acid yellow-green where the low sun rakes the tops, near-black beneath, soil showing in a gap or two.
