The photographs
Week of 20 JulyA climber on 21 July with every stem and leaf axis run through magenta and its leaflets netted all over in magenta veins on cream, each leaf ending in a fine tendril that splits into several coiling arms, half of them dried and curled, all of them wet.Week of 24 AugustA climber on 26 August with nothing yet in flower to name it by — wine-purple stems, paired leaves flushed maroon at the newest and plain green below, every shoot ending in a fine branching tendril reaching for the wire mesh behind.Week of 31 AugustA vine that ends each compound leaf not in a leaflet but in a forked tendril, hooked onto its stake on 3 September — grading as it climbs from plain green at the base to bronze-purple at the top, and carrying not one open flower in hard warm side sun.
