The photographs
Week of 1 JuneA hosta on 6 June, its leaves arching out in overlapping layers from one tight crown, each blade edged all round with an irregular cream-white band and pleated between its arcuate veins, a second paler clump crowding in from the right.Week of 1 JuneA hosta from directly overhead on 6 June, a rosette of heart-shaped blades radiating from a single crown, two or three of them cupped or twisted to show a paler underside, one dandelion flowering in the moss beside it under flat shadowless light.Week of 20 JulyA hosta on 21 July, its cream margins fingering inward along the veins of every blue-green leaf and puckering where the two colors meet, one scape still all fat lilac buds while a thinner one behind has already opened a single flower.Week of 3 AugustA cream-edged hosta in flower on 5 August, every blade quilted between ten deeply impressed veins and twisted to a point, with two bare scapes standing clear of the mound and one lilac trumpet open on them, rain still beaded under green light off the trees.
