The photographs
Week of 25 MayFifteen single blades on 30 May, one seedling apiece and widely spaced down a mound of red bark, each one flat and folded along a pale keel rather than tubular, a few leaning over, with flowering white clover crowding right up to the bed edge.Week of 25 MayThe same mound stripped back to bare dark compost by 31 May, twenty-five seedlings standing in two loose rows down it, their flat keeled blades pale yellow-green and mostly flopping over, white root threads scattered on the surface between them.Week of 29 JuneTwenty young plants on 29 June in loose rows, each a pale wrapped shaft throwing four to six keeled straps out in a single flat two-ranked fan, the row stouter on the right than the left, with clover in white flower pressing at the edge.Week of 24 AugustFlat leaves folded lengthwise along a keel into shallow Vs rather than rolled into tubes, on 26 August, and shot so tightly into the foliage that no shank, no base and no bulb shows anywhere in the frame.Week of 31 AugustJaune du Poitou leeks on 4 September, shot from just above ground so one stout pale shank fills the frame and its flat strap leaves fan out two-ranked, each folded along a central keel into a shallow V. Rain still beads the leaves under flat overcast light.Week of 28 SeptemberOn 29 September, a double row of fifteen or more plants fans broad V-folded blue-green straps from thick pale shafts, the longest arched over and kinked where they flopped onto bare reddish soil. Droplets sit in the leaf folds under flat overcast light.
