The photographs
Week of 22 JuneA pepper set out on 23 June, six or seven cupped glossy leaves on one short stem flushed faintly purple at its base and a bunched cluster of new growth at the tip, rain still beaded on it, the turf around it thick with clover in flower.Week of 6 JulyA transplant on 6 July down to six or seven leaves and no bud on it anywhere, one of them badly puckered and another already shed and lying yellow beside it, everything wet from the rain under a flat overcast.Week of 6 JulyDown to five or six leaves on 9 July, glossy and untoothed and each one beaded with dew, several bleached to whitish patches and one gone almost wholly yellow — the stem tip forked into a crowd of creamy-white buds, not one of them open, in hard low sun.
