The photographs
Week of 22 JuneA pepper on 23 June, set off in one corner of an otherwise bare bed, seven or eight glossy leaves on a smooth ridged stem with a small cluster of new ones at the tip, several cupped or wavy at the edge and nearly all of them still holding rain.Week of 6 JulyA seedling on 6 July grazed down to almost nothing: big scalloped bites out of nearly every margin, one lower leaf left as little more than its rim and midrib, another rolled shut into a dry brown tube, wet through under flat overcast.Week of 6 JulyAn Orange Sun pepper on 9 July, eight leaves on a thread of a stem and set so far off to one side of its bag that it barely registers in it — one blade much larger and paler than the rest, kaolin scattered over them, dew on every surface around it.
