Week of 1 JuneA small potted herb on 1 June, its reddish stems crowded right to the tip with narrow stalkless leaves that radiate out in every direction — each margin rolled under, each surface pebbled and dusted with a bloom that pools down the middle.Week of 1 JuneA rosemary on 5 June, still in its own nursery pot set down inside the bag, its stems crowded end to end with narrow leaves held stiffly out at right angles, each one warty on top and rolled tight under, bright green only at the tips.Week of 1 JuneA rosemary on 6 June, its pot now sunk down into the bag, the leaves clustered tightest at the growing tips — gland-dotted above, fringed with fine white hairs along edge and midline, and paler, almost whitish, underneath.Week of 22 JuneA young rosemary on 22 June, its shoots crowded stiff with strap leaves into bottle-brushes, dark above and white-felted beneath with the margins rolled under, standing in a hand-built pot where a clay octopus rests its head on the rim, eyes closed.Week of 3 AugustA potted rosemary on 5 August, its needle leaves rolled so tightly under that they show woolly gray-white where they twist, tips gone yellow and brown, new growth flushing purple at the shoot ends, a small stone animal leaning against the pot.
