The photographs
Week of 22 JuneThirty sets on 25 June, one to each red drinking cup pressed into service as a pot, every pale bulb sitting up on the surface with its skin browning down one side and its hollow leaves flopped sideways across the neighbors, in flat shadowless light.Week of 6 JulyAbout fifteen alliums on 12 July, each a papery golden bulb sitting right on the surface with a few wiry roots showing, their keeled leaves either standing tall or flopped flat on the ground — harsh midday sun, the top of the frame in tree shade.Week of 20 JulyOnion-family bulbs on 23 July, seven or eight sitting proud of the bed rather than buried and not one of them divided into cloves, one rolled on its side with the tan skin peeled back to the greenish scale beneath, low sun throwing long hard shadows.Week of 20 JulyOne lifted bulb on 23 July, teardrop-shaped under a straw-tan skin torn open to the cream scale and blushed bronze-purple at the shoulder, its cut neck collapsed to a flat sheath at one end and forty-odd kinked roots trailing off the paper at the other.
