The photographs

A lax herb held up on an open palm on 6 June, slender stems flopping out over both sides and flushed dull pink-red at the base, its narrow untoothed leaves splitting into two or three points at every shoot tip, the plank wall behind glowing orange.

On 9 July thin wiry stems, several of them reddish-brown, run out flat across a shallow clay bowl and up over its rim, narrow leaves crowded along them and many notched or forked at the tip — a shoot or two died back to bare stem, hard low sun across it.
