The photographs
Week of 29 JuneA Dester tomato seedling on 29 June, its bare stem bent into an S and unbranched almost to the top where it opens into thin pale leaflets, leaning into the one shaft of daylight that crosses the bench and leaves the far side in deep shade.Week of 6 JulyOn 8 July, one thick hairy stem branching out level with nothing yet in flower on it — the compound leaves broad and oval-leafleted, margins only bluntly toothed rather than sawtoothed, every blade furred and still holding dew in a low raking sun.Week of 6 JulyA young Dester tomato on 12 July, its leaflets cut almost to the midrib and softly hairy enough to read gray in the sun, standing alone in low warm side light — the photographer's own shoe intruding on the timber at the bottom corner.
