The photographs
Week of 29 JuneA Stupice tomato on 29 June, bare-stemmed and gray-green with its leaves curling inward, already carrying one small round fruit on a short hairy truss and two more setting behind it, two of its six cells still nothing but bare compost.Week of 6 JulyA newly set transplant on 7 July whose leaflets come out broad and oval with shallow rounded teeth, nothing like the deeply cut sawtooth foliage on the taller plant behind it, standing on scuffed bare earth under a flat overcast.Week of 13 JulyStupice tomatoes on 17 July, two near-perfect green spheres side by side, matte and densely covered in tiny pale hairs, each under a calyx of six or seven keeled sepals fringed with stiff white hair and curving right away from the fruit.Week of 3 AugustA Stupice tomato on 5 August seen from ground level, a faint paler star radiating out of its blossom end and the very first hint of cream-yellow blush on the nearest of two, their pointed sepals curled back and stiff with hairs.
