Shallots, 23 July 2026

One photograph from the 2026 season.

Onion-family bulbs on 23 July, seven or eight sitting proud of the bed rather than buried and not one of them divided into cloves, one rolled on its side with the tan skin peeled back to the greenish scale beneath, low sun throwing long hard shadows.
